"Let's get to work"...
If your daughter loves basketball and intends on playing winter hoops for 5 or 6 grade this upcoming season, I highly recommend you RSVP below. This session is for 5-6th grade athletes that want to learn. If your athlete is not passionate about basketball, or is uncoachable, this is not the session for them.
A simple check to know if this is right for your daughter...if you have to drag her to basketball practice or games, this is not for her and very respectfully, please do not RSVP for this. We only want kids who love the game and have a passion for the game to attend.
The principles we will walk through align with Eagan Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Jesse Madsen vision and from what I've been able to observe, also with St. Croix Lutheran Academy's Girls Varsity program.
Even better, the principles we will work through can be applied to ANY offensive system. Hope to see your daughter athlete attend!
Establishing a strong supportive group of teammates is the foundation for our read and react offense. We spent time on 16AUG2023 working together as a team, communicating with each other and emphasizing positive touches. We need that established. We pushed a high tempo challenging experience, while still providing space for the girls to see success...this was done on purpose.
Now it is time we provide a space to SLOW down and work through the principles of read & react within the 5 out framework.
The "Read and React" basketball offense is a system designed to provide players with a structured yet adaptable approach to playing offense. It focuses on teaching players to read the defense and make decisions based on the actions of their teammates and opponents. This offense is particularly suitable for middle school age kids as it promotes basketball IQ, decision-making, teamwork, and fundamental skills.
Spacing: The offense starts with proper spacing. Players should be spread out on the court, occupying different areas to create passing lanes and opportunities to drive to the basket. We started to learn this offense in 4th and 5th grade seasons using 5-out as our different areas. Offense LOVES spacing!
Decision making area: An action from the ball carrier creates reactions and provides the cutter the opportunity for decision making. After a pass, a cut is the next reaction, after the cut, the cutting player can make a series of decision, to include post up, screen ball, screen away.
Passing and Cutting: The core of the Read and React offense is built around continuous passing and cutting. When a player has the ball, others move off the ball by cutting to the basket, making backdoor cuts, or relocating to open spots. If the ball isn't passed within a certain time, the player with the ball can initiate a dribble drive, or call for a screen.
The Cutter: The cutter also seamlessly becomes a post up player in both the high and low post. If we see a mis-match or opportunity, we can adjust our 5 out framework into a 4 - 1 framework, and work within the same fundamental principles, just in a different shape.
Identifying back cuts or front cuts...moving without the ball, using a candy cane shape, or A and V cuts are all options to get open and or create opportunities.
Dribble Penetration: Players are encouraged to drive to the basket when they see an opportunity. As one player drives, others read the situation and adjust their positions accordingly. This can lead to kick-out passes for open shots or dump-off passes to teammates near the basket.
Ball Screens and Screens Away: Depending on the situation, players can set screens for their teammates. This can include ball screens for the ball handler or screens away from the ball to create movement and confusion in the defense.
Passing around the horn: Moving the ball quickly around the 3 point line to get a zone defense out of position and tired.
Continuity: The Read and React offense is designed to be continuous. This means that even if a play doesn't result in a scoring opportunity, players can rebuild as often as needed. The rebuild does not need to be a full reset, but it can...Ideally, instead a rebuild seamlessly transition into other actions based on what the defense is giving them.
Reading Help Defense: Players learn to recognize when the defense collapses to help on a driving player. This prompts them to kick the ball out to open teammates on the perimeter, creating open shot opportunities.
Teamwork and Communication: This offense requires strong teamwork and communication. Players need to talk to each other, call out screens, cuts, and defensive actions to make the system work effectively.
Adaptability: The Read and React offense is not a strict set of plays but a framework that adapts to the defense's reactions. Players need to be adaptable and make decisions in real-time based on what the defense is doing.
Practice and Repetition: To master the Read and React offense, players need practice and repetition. This helps them build the necessary skills, awareness, and understanding of the system.
The Read and React offense is a player-centered system that encourages creativity, decision-making, and develops a fundamental understanding of the game. For middle school age kids, it provides a foundation for developing both individual skills and team cohesion while promoting a fun and engaging style of play.
Play with joy. Play together. Communicate. Encourage. Work hard. Help eachother. Do tough stuff. Growth. Get better. Don't complain. Compete. Be coachable. Think the game. Become your own best coach. Shoot the shot. Box out. Do extra. Trust. Respect. Compete. Hustle. Attitude. Effort. Give more than you take. Give energy. Never give up. Prepare. Body language. The strength of the player is the pack and the strenght of the pack is the player. We fight for each other.
